Artful Hotels: Canopy Portland

During a recent home renovation project where we needed to vacate our house for a few days, my husband and I had the unique opportunity to check-in to a local hotel right over the bridge from our home in South Portland - The Canopy by Hilton Portland Waterfront. Known as one of the more dog-friendly hotels downtown, we were eager to bring Thatcher, our spaniel, along for our staycation and he enjoyed himself every bit as we did.

The 135-room property is filled with fantastic art sourced from local artists, all curated by art consultant, Erin Hutton. Local businesses and makers are highlighted throughout the hotel, thanks to the local interior design firm Ealain Studio. Evangeline blankets are placed at the foot of every bed and dogs enjoy their very own L.L. Bean bed. Pieces from local furniture makers, Huston & Company and Matt Hutton, are utilized throughout the property and the sitting room’s bookshelves are filled with titles by Maine authors.

Scroll down for more photos from our visit and as many details as I could find on the art highlighted throughout the hotel.

Four encaustic paintings by Dietland Vander Schaaf hang over the fireplace in the lobby; ceramics by Heather Stewart Harvey hold florals by artist Kelly Pastorek;

A wooden sculpture installation made from bent ash wood by Karina K. Steele anchors the hotel’s downstairs restaurant, Salt Yard Cafe & Bar.

Reproductions of works by Perryn Ferris appear in the bathrooms in each of the guest rooms.

Handmade paper flowers by Kelly Pastorek appear in each of the rooms.

I felt as though I barely scratched the surface with all of the original art and unique details highlighted throughout The Canopy - it’s absolutely worth going to experience for yourself.

‘Artful Hotels’ is a travel series featuring hotels and inns that place an emphasis on art and design as an integral part of their guest experience. Having the chance to visit different art-filled properties over the years has greatly informed our aesthetic and the way we prefer to travel. These photographs are from our own personal travels.
