Anne Darby Parker Studio Tour

After working with artist, Anne Darby Parker, for over two years now, I finally had the chance to meet her in person at her studio & home on Sullivan’s Island, just outside of Charleston, South Carolina. Anne & I have FaceTimed on occasion throughout the past two years, but nothing compares to getting to visit and see her work (and her beautiful studio space!) in person.

Anne is preparing for a big solo show in Charleston this May, perfectly timed for right at the beginning of Charleston’s Spoleto Festival. Visiting her with just another two months to go before the show meant that the studio was full of her amazing, expressive figures. We’ve always carried Anne’s smaller and medium works here, so it was a treat to be able to see some of her largest works that will anchor parts of her solo show up close and in person. At the moment, Anne is also taking a remote workshop with Lucy MacGillis, so we were able to see her still life set up for that, including the paints she’s mixed herself, a process that has really encouraged her to consider the relationships of the colors she’s using.

Having now visited Anne at home and in the studio, this part of Anne’s biographical statement resonates even more with me now:

“Growing up on Sullivan’s Island, a barrier island in South Carolina, made areas where sand meets water Anne’s preferred place. Her expression often reflects the spontaneous and rhythmic movement of island life.”

A big thank you to Anne for opening her home & studio to us - it was an unforgettable experience!
