Artist’s Statement

“My wife and I have stayed in various New England seaside towns over the last few years making the delightful effort to visit every beach we can. Many of my paintings are about my memory of these wonderful places: clear, cold water, enveloping sun with a cool breeze, and a variety of shallows that change like gentle moods, evoking a calm steady fascination with the wonder of water shimmering in the sun and the breeze. My response is to want to paint that memory.

I love painterly abstraction, the way it can capture feelings of connectedness and recognition. Although having some figurative elements - a horizon, the layering of water - my work is really the experience of line and form, materials, color and texture evoking the memory of feeling of a place, paint and gesture as an analog, spontaneous and fresh, letting a certain randomness into the work that seems to capture a sense of what it is.

I’m not sure what is so powerful for me about abstraction, but part of it surely is a basic visual language that carries meaning in itself and about the world around us.”
